Geocache Description:

This multicache brings you on a short journey from the Fr. Michael Murphy Monument in the centre of Arklow to the cache's final location, using information from the monument itself. The final cache is hidden at a site also related to Fr. Murphy.

The first stage of this multicache brings you to the Fr. Michael Murphy monument in Arklow's main street. The cache container is not located at these coordinates.

Fr. Murphy was an Irish Roman Catholic priest and United Irishmen leader who fought in the 1798 Rebellion, and was subsequently killed during the Battle of Arklow. Michael Murphy was born in either Ballinoulart, Castleannesley or in Kilnew, County Wexford. He was educated at a hedge school in Oulart, ordained at Wexford in 1785, and travelled to France the following fall. Upon his return he became parish priest of Ballycanew, and according to Musgrave "behaved himself with very great propriety till the rebellion broke out." Murphy took up arms following the ransacking of his church by Crown yeomen on 27 May (most church leaders were opposed to the conflict). He then travelled to Gorey, Kilthomas Hill, and joined Fr. John Murphy (of Boolavogue) on Ballyorril Hill. Fr. Michael Murphy was shot and killed as he fought on horseback at the Battle of Arklow in June 1798. He was leading an attack on a gun position defending the western approach to the town. Murphy was buried at Castle Ellis.

The monument was erected in 1898 to commemorate the centenary of the death of Fr. Murphy. An animated white limestone statue depicting him in the act of leading, set on a square grey limestone pedestal with moulded cornices and inscription panels. The arrangement is protected with a wrought-iron railing.

To find the final location, cachers must obtain clues from the monument to work out the final coordinates. All answers can be found on the monument. Where an answer is a word, the numbers of letters in that word should be used.

The final coordinates are: N 52 YM.PYM   W 006 XQ.MPE

E = How many men on the executive committee have the first name 'Michael'?

M = What U.S. city was the American Committee from?

P = The treasurer's surname.

Q = The Battle of Arklow was fought on ___ June 1798.

X = The number of letters in Mr. Condren's first name minus the number of letters in Mr. Allen's first name.

Y = How many faces are on the monument?

The cache is hidden a 5 minute walk from the monument. The container is a magnetic nano. Please bring your own pen.
