Mashipacong Fort, a traditional local name for a former fort not mentioned by Jonathon Hampton, was located in this area near an old marker. Only scant references exist for a Shipeconk Fort. Although that fort does not appear on Hampton's maps, it is believed to have been built by 1757. State archives of 1763 also refer to the fort, but do not verify its location. Quite possibly, since "Mashipacong" and "Shipeconk" are phonetically quite similar, they were thought to be one and the same.
Various sources mention Shipeconk Fort and Fort Brinks, and historians have speculated if possibly those refer to the same fort. A hill near Millville Rd. may have been the site of this fort and is known as which of these?
