Until the advent of the automobile, the public transportation between Port Jervis, NY and Milford, PA was stagecoach. The route was along what is today call “Old Milford Road”, with stops at Port Jervis, Matamoras, Rosetown, Quicktown, and Milford. One of these stagecoaches was the “Hiawatha” which ran for over 50 years. It would carry the mail 3 times a day and could carry up to 22 passengers. You can view the “Hiawatha” today at “The Columns” , the home of the Pike County Historical Society. How many times a day was the mail carried by stagecoach?
