Metsä on karun pohjolan uusiutuva luonnonvara. Entisaikaan suomalaiset saivat metsästä kaiken tarvitsemansa - tarpeet talon rakennukseen ja lämmitykseen, ravinnon riistasta ja muista antimista sekä rohdot vaivoihinsa metsän yrteistä. Suomen metsien laajamittainen hyödyntäminen alkoi 1600-luvulla tervan tuotannon laajetessa ja kun puuta alettiin hakata rautaruukkien polttoaineeksi.
Nykyisin pohjoiset havumetsät tuottavat kolmasosan maailman metsäteollisuuspuusta. Tällaisia metsiä, joista saadaan taloudellista hyötyä, kutsutaan yleisesti talousmetsiksi. Suomen talousmetsien hoito on jo kauan ollut kestävän käytön periaatteen mukaista. Toisin sanoen hakkuiden jälkeen huolehditaan aina siitä, että tilalle alkaa heti kasvaa kunnollinen uusi metsä. Vähän matkan päässä luontopolulla tulee vastaan koivikko, joka on aikoinaan saanut alkunsa entiselle peltomaalle istutetuista koivun taimista.
Forests are renewable natural source of the barren nothern lands. In the old days Finns got everything they needed from the forests - materials to build houses and to keep the warm, game to eat and herbs to cure their illnesses and injuries. In Finland the vast organised exploitation of the forests begun in 1600 century when tar burning became more popular and large amounts of firewood was needed to run ironworks.
Today Nordic coniferous forests produce one third of the industrial wood of the whole world. These types of forests, which people can gain financial benefit from, are called industrial forests. In Finland forestry has been carried out according to methods of sustainable development already for a long time. In other words a new tree growth is secured immediately after cutting down trees. A bit futher on the nature trail there is a birch forest, that has grown from the birch saplings planted to a former field ground.
