SQ+ORS - Hollenbeck Traditional Cache

HISTORY: Hollenbeck School, which was torn down many years ago due to neglect, was established around 1841 according to the Columbiaville History Book, although that seems really early given the amount of landowners on record for 1848. There was a school near the present day cemetery in 1863, by 1874 it was "moved" north to the location marked by the waypoint and that's where Hollenbeck School remained. Hollenbeck was the first school in Marathon Township and named for the Hollenbeck Family, early settlers here. The cemetery was not marked on the 1863 map but burials on record are from prior to this date. It was common to start a cemetery next door to a schoolhouse when a church wasn't in the area, as the school was used for Sunday services, local meetings and often funerals. The first school was made of logs and wooden shingles, probably of pine sawn from surrounding land. The second school to the north was frame. I currently don't have any photos of either school.
