Geocache Description:

The 2009 Black Saturday bushfires ravaged many parts of Victoria and touched directly and indirectly many millions of people in the State, across Australia and internationally. One hundred and seventy three people died, thousands of homes and other dwellings were destroyed and more than 400,000 hectares burnt.

In gusting winds just after midday, a corroded tie wire holding a 48-year-old single wire earth return (SWER) power line to an insulator on a pole 490 metres southwest of the cache GZ, failed due to metal fatigue. The powerline swung free in the wind, striking a nearby eucalyptus tree.

You are looking for a small Systema style cache with some swaps. Keep safety in mind during your search and it should be an easy find.

Burning gum leaves fell to the ground and with the worse bushfire conditions ever recorded, a fire started and grew rapidly in the hot, dry and windy conditions.

With a temperature of more than 40 degrees Celsius and winds reaching 100 km per hour, the fire was being driven directly towards the small community of Coleraine.

Look in the Gallery for a map of the fire.
