Geocache Description:

As the Black Saturday fire reached Coleraine, it crossed the Glenelg Highway here and the Avenue of Honour, planted to recognise the sacrifice made by the Coleraine community in times of war, succumbed to the onslaught with 54 trees lost.

Then a southwest wind change came, pushing the fire to the northeast and around the small community. The regional CFA operations officer said it was expected that the fire would go through Coleraine, but it headed off at the last minute.

You are looking for a magnetic Bison tube container. Bring a pen.

If the wind change had come 15 minutes later, the fire would have been catastrophic for the community as it would have pushed the fire into the town, impacting the hospital on the western edge.

When travelling in regional Victoria over summer, be aware of the Fire Danger Rating (Black Saturday was our first Code Red day), listen to the radio for fire reports and if you are unsure, call the Victorian Bushfire Information Line on 1800 240 667.

To return the log, roll it up and place it in the lid, then slide the tube over the log.

Check out the Gallery for a photo of firefighters trying to safe the trees.
