Geocache Description:

CACHE: Cemetery rules do not apply. A little muggly. Poison ivy near GZ. Park and grab.

HISTORY: In the late 1860's a burial ground was established on the Mitchell property. As Lum to the north started to grow and the railroad came through, the burials here were moved to the new cemetery in town. As far as history knows, all graves were moved only to Lum. Location of the former cemetery was shown to me in the mid-1990's by then resident Thelma Cole. They knew a cemetery once was on their property and discovered one day while leveling out their land. Her words "we found the remains of the old cemetery, the pieces we found weren't grisly". She described them as pieces of coffins, clothing like buttons, and broken parts of headstone. She had asked her husband Leslie to be sure there weren't any bones. They found none. Thelma said that it couldn't have been very large or the grave diggers did an awfully good job. This didn't matter to her though, and she made sure her vegetable garden was away from the site.
