Geocache Description:

Located on the outer edge of Tuscarawas Memorial Park. I wanted to place this cache in honor of the bicentennial of the village of Tuscarawas. You're looking for a pill bottle. Contains logbook and small items for trade. BYOP. Daylight cache only. Beware of muggles, especially during baseball season.

BRIEF HISTORY OF TUSCARAWAS

In 1816 the village of Tuscarawas, or what is better known as “Tusky”, was laid out by Abraham Romig and Abraham Rickseeker not too long after Lewis Knauss erected the first log cabin on site. Although the name was changed on petition to Trenton very early on, the name Tuscarawas remained in use. The village slowly grew as more settlers, many being Moravians arriving from various parts of Pennsylvania, began to move into the area. Tuscarawas had a major population boom in the mid 1800s when the canal attracted more settlers, going from about 120 residents in 1834 to 314 in 1880.

Tuscarawas continued to grow and flourish throughout the years. The Tuscarawas Postoffice was established by John Minnich, one of the most substantial founders of Tuscarawas, in 1827. The first church service on record in St. James Lutheran Church took place in 1832, led by Rev. E Greenwald. The church's first cornerstone was also laid because of the efforts of John Minnich. The construction of Town Hall was completed in 1904, which included the mayor’s office, Township room, and an auditorium. In 1928, the Tuscarawas-Warwick Township School Building was built. This building has since been rebuilt and is currently being used as Indian Valley’s middle school.

Today, with a population just shy of one thousand, you can find a library, community park, family owned restaurants, taverns, and businesses, the Zeisberger Trail, and much more in the village of Tuscarawas.
