Geocache Description:

An awesome cache for those who love books.  And birds.

This former US Post Office for Elizabethton, TN sits at the corner of North Sycamore Street and East E Street.  It was built between 1931 and 1933 thanks to an allotment of $125,000 from Congress through the leadership of Congressman B. Carroll Reece during the height of the Great Depression.  Employing at times as many as 75 local workers, the construction project finally finished on March 6th 1933 when the neo-classical building with its robust columns officially opened to the public.  It served as the Post Office until September 3rd, 1988 when it was decommissioned for four years until the City of Elizabethton purchased the property and began constructing a new library within its walls.  The new Elizabethton-Carter County Public Library officially opened on November 16th, 1992 after the building underwent an estimated $1.1 million renovation and addition.  The current building encompasses over 13,000 square feet, is capable of holding over 50,000 books and videos, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

This the first in a series of caches placed in Elizabethton and Carter County by members of the 2015-16 Leadership Class.

You are looking for a white birdhouse on the grounds of the former US Post Office.  Inside you will find goodies and treasures...not in the birdhouse, but in the building.  Trackable for FTF.
