Geocache Description:

CACHE: Park and Grab

HISTORY:  Thornville School was built in 1868 but there was an earlier school near here that sold for auction to John Lant for $42.50. The committee to build the new school was to have one "suitable to hold a bell of 100 pounds". The first set of plans for this school were changed so the final school would end up being larger and on a whole acre of land. The brass bell was constructed in New York, ordered by a church in Almont, but the church didn't like the tone of the bell so it was sold to Thornville School for $20. Today this bell sits in a yard on Blood Road, purchased after the bell was donated to raise funds for the Dryden School band. The school taught students through the 10th grade, with 8th grade being mandatory back in those days. Over the years the board approved many upgrades from a water pump, to a road to the school, redoing the lathe and plaster walls including paint, new chimney, floors and seats, as well as a fancy woodshed. In June 1957, the school closed it's doors to students for good and the kids then attended at Dryden. Eventually the school fell into disrepair and was torn down.

NOTEWORTHY: On the northeast side of this bridge is where a sawmill sat, on the banks of the South Branch Flint River.
