Kuranui Bay was a popular spot for miners to settle during the gold mining hay days, as it was close to the gold fields. These days the area is residential with a rock wall surrounding the community to protect it from high tides. In the 1800s the area also housed a number of businesses including a butchery and other similar shops along the foreshore. The sound of the stamper batteries operating in the hills behind was so loud as to be heard from Auckland.
Enjoy the peace and tranquility of this beach as it is now, then imagine what it would have been like 100 years ago as a highly industrious mining area.
