OFHP 1-4 – Tales From the Crypt

On October 30th 2014, crews working on the new path dug up unmarked graves at a location that was not mapped as a cemetery. It makes you wonder how many other burial locations there are on this property. Could this be one of them?

Century-old Oak Forest Graves Dug Up by Forest Preserve Crews

Wednesday, November 05, 2014

OAK FOREST, Ill. (WLS) -- An old public cemetery where 100,000 people are buried is causing a clash between two Cook County agencies because one of them started to dig up the graves, the ABC7 I-Team is reporting.

One hundred and twenty-five years of resting in peace has come to an end for some Cook County residents. Forest preserve crews disturbed the dead in a sprawling unmarked graveyard near the old Oak Forest Hospital, and now how it happened is triggering a contentious inter-county quarrel with the sheriff's department.

Parking:

Visitors can enter the Oak Forest Heritage Preserve off 159th Street, through the Medical Center's main entrance, and follow the signs (just tell security that you are visiting the Heritage Preserve). Parking is also available through the parking lot on Fieldcrest Drive just off of Pulaski or at the Fieldcrest Park parking lot.

Notes:

  • Bring your camera! This is a beautiful preserve with a lot of wildlife, history, and many informative signs.
  • This is a forest preserve and I suggest bug repellent and long pants. Watch for poison ivy, although I tried to place all caches away from it, you may run into it. There are also ticks in the area.
  • This series can be done walking, running, or biking.
  • Dogs are allowed, but must be leashed at all times.
  • Do not place the following items in the Geocache: Food items, inappropriate, offensive, or hazardous materials.
  • Hours are sunrise until sunset. Preserve users must not be in the preserves after hours.
  • Please remember, it’s not an official find until you log it online.
