Geocache Description:

The Wellfleet Health and Conservation Department has placed a number of caches around Wellfleet to help locals and tourists alike make it out to some of Wellfleet’s many beautiful trails and recreational areas.

The Head of Duck Creek area is hidden behind the Mobil station off of Route 6. This spot overlooks the marsh and the sandy areas are a popular breeding ground for terrapin turtles. Between May and September, you may see predator exclusion cages set up over turtle nests. PLEASE, DO NOT WALK ON SANDY AREAS- it makes it hard for the terrapin volunteers to follow tracks. If you see an area of sand that appears to be dug in, leave it plenty of space- there may be eggs inside!

Along with terrapins, Head of Duck Creek Conservation Area is also popular with butterflies. Wellfleet Conservation Trust has planted milkweed around the site in hopes of attracting butterflies- especially monarchs.

The site once hosted a house that has since been torn down. The cement foundation that remains now hosts a picnic table- so feel free to bring a snack and enjoy the views after geocaching!

Being in New England, we advise you to check yourself for ticks after your geocaching adventure.

NOTE: The gas station has requested that you drive through the pumps to exit. Thank you!
