Geocache Description:

La tour gothique de Carnières est le point de départ de la randonnée pédestre "Les Deux Tours".

Prendre un stylo.

Histoire de la Commune Appelée : Carneres (906), Carnerae (911), Carneris (1179), Carnières (1254), Carneriae, puis Carnières, ce nom semble venir de carme, mot patois pour "charme", soit un lieu planté de charmes. Mais il est possible de soutenir une étymologie plus ancienne. Carnières viendrait du mot celtique "cairn" : pierre, en gaulois « carnitus » amas de pierres, là où on trouve la pierre ; les carrières en témoignent toujours.

L’occupation romaine à Carnières est reconnue puisque on y découvrit des débris de construction et des tuiles de l’époque gallo-romaine. En creusant une carrières au lieu dit : « aux flozies » entre Carnières et Cagnoncles en 1839, on découvrit huit squelettes tournés vers l’Orient (des mérovingiens). On trouve encore de nombreux souterrains près de l’église.

Le plus beau monument demeure la tour de l’église de style ogival, sans flèche, mais avec une tourelle et qui date de 1543.

 

History of the municipality

Called: Carneres ( 906 ), Carnerae ( 911 ), Carneris ( 1179 ), Carnières ( 1254 ), Carneriae, then Carnières, this name seems to come from "Carme", word dialect for "charm", is a standing place of charms. But it is possible to support an older etymology. Carnières would come from the Celtic word "cairn": stone, in Gaul " carnitus " stony heap, where we find the stone; careers(quarries) always testify of it.

The Roman occupation to Carnières is recognized because we discovered it fragments of construction and tiles of Gallo-Roman period. By digging one careers in the said place: " in flozies " between Carnières and Cagnoncles in 1839, we discovered eight skeletons turned to the East (of the Merovingians). We still find numerous underground passages near the church.

The most beautiful monument remains the tower of the church of Gothic style, without arrow, but with a turret and which dates from 1543.
