Geocache Description:

The coordinates will take you to a spot below the Dublin magazine fort, which was built in 1735. During the British occupation the Fort had been seen as a symbol of the occupation, which has always reminded me of the Moncada Barracks in Santiago de Cuba.

Many nights have I lain in wait amidst vegetation here to take part in an imaginary attack which never happened.

On July 26, 1953, the Moncada barracks was the site of an armed attack by a small group of revolutionaries led by Fidel Castro. This attack is widely accepted as the beginning of the Cuban Revolution.

Castro, who was a qualified lawyer, made his famous speech in his own defense in court against the charges brought against him after leading the attack on the Moncada Barracks.

"I know that the regime will try to supress the truth by all possible means; I know that there will be a conspiracy to bury me in oblivion. But my voice will not be stifled - it will rise from my breast even when I feel most alone, and my heart will give it all the fire that callous cowards deny it ... Condemn me. It does not matter. History will absolve me."

The date on which the attack took place, July 26, was adopted by Castro as the name for his revolutionary movement which eventually toppled the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista on the 1st of January 1959.
