Spiritbrook Park

Spiritbrook Park is a wet area. But you wouldn't know it, thanks to the drainage system that was installed. After years of settling and soaking turf, the City rebuilt the park and constructed a unique stormwater treatment system.

Stormwater from the street flows into the pump vault (WP1). The pumps inside the underground vault are controlled by the pump station panels (WP2). When it rains, the pumps turn on and send water into a valve vault (WP3) that distributes water in underground pipes below the lawn. The water irrigates the grass and the grass roots remove pollutants from the stormwater. The water seeps through the soil into a collection system where the clean, cool water then flows by gravity to the wetland in the back corner of the park. The wetland overflows and the cleaned and cooled stormwater ultimately drains to Peters Creek.

The Hide

1. Visit WP1. You will see two underground concrete vaults with aluminum lids. Inside these vaults are the stormwater pumps. If you listen you may hear them running. Count the number of lids in the larger vault. (Hint: if there are two doors on a lid, count it as two.) A = Number of Lids.
2. You can visit WP2, to see the panels, if you like. 3. Visit WP3. You will see the valve manifold vaults, small concrete boxes underground, next to the grassy field. Each concrete vault has a single aluminum lid. B = number of valve vaults.
