Geocache Description:

The church of Our Lady, Queen of Peace is located at the junction of the Vevay and Putland roads in Bray, with the main entrance on the latter

The Putland Road, laid out as a famine relief scheme in 1846, is named after the Putland family who lived in Bray Head House, which can still be seen just down from the church, beside the Bray Adult Education Centre, although it has sadly been boarded up for some years.

The hamlet of Newtown Vevay and the Putland road gradually filled with housing in the early years of the 20th century, with the biggest change being the construction of Wolfe Tone Square in 1936. This meant a large number of people making the return trip to the Church of the Holy Redeemer in the Main Street.  The Presentation Brothers, who had bought Bray Head house and opened their new school there in 1921, donated two acres at the top of the Putland Road for a new church. Plans were delayed by the Second World War, but at Christmas 1944 it got the go-ahead.

By present day timescales progress was extremely rapid.  Local people organised fund-raising activities and raised the £18,000 required, a contractor was selected and the church, with a capacity of 1,000 was officially opened on December 15th 1946.  Although the church was fully operational, it was 1954 before the actual parish of Our Lady Queen of Peace was established.

The Cache

The cache is a micro, please BYOP and a tweezers might be useful.  Please put the cache back exactly where you find it!  There is parking available in the church car park.  The 45A, 84 and 184 buses stop nearby.  Please use discretion, as that this can be a very busy spot.

I want to place a Church Micro cache too...

The Church Micro IE series is open to everyone; if you have a church you would like to place a cache at then please contact THE_Chris through Geocaching.com.  This is to keep track of the numbers of the churches and give you the general format for the cache page. In the UK there are nearly 10,000 caches in the series so we have some catching up to do!  Also, if you currently have a published cache at a church that you would like to include in the series, get in contact and we can add it.
