English:
If you happen to visit Zhāngjiājiè - as one of the 20,000,000 visitors per year - you will most likely enter the Quartz Sandstone Forest Park in the "Wǔlíngyuán Scenic and Historic Interest Area". At first glance, you will be surprised about the hefty entrance fee. After having recovered from that shock you will be carried away very soon and overwhelmed by the otherworldly geological features.
The famous high pillars are really stunning. However, it would be great to find out more about the evolution of this otherworldly landscape.
Clearly it must be the result of erosion over the run of many millions of years. In general, there is the impact of water and temperature. Precipitation lets the water run over the rock surface.
Physical impact: Loose particles are eventually flushed away by the running water creating crevices that become wider. In winter, the water solidifies to ice. Due to the anomaly of water this causes a significant expansion. Thus it bursts the rock where water was trapped in crevices. Earthquakes can contribute significantly, too.
Chemical impact: It can be described as the cycle of lime. Carbon dioxide gets dissolved in the rainwater creating Carbonic acid. If this comes accross indissoluble limestone (Calciumcarbonate, CaCO3) it creates dissoluble Calciumhydrogencarbonate, Ca(HCO3)2. This is flushed out creating even bigger gaps in the rocks. Coming to a dry surface the water evaporates leaving indissoluble limestone again creating stalactites and stalagmites in limestone caves.
Biological impact: Seeds from various plants are placed by the wind or birds. When they grow they develop extreme high pressure. The rock splits and the new gaps are prone to further erosion.
After admiring all the stunning pillars and the natural bridge in this park you might want to log the Earthcache as "found". Please, answer at least three of the questions 1 to 5 and send them to the cache owner to get permission to do so!
1. The present status of the numerous pillars is the result of many millions of years of geological change. Tell us how many million years approximately made this change.
2. Characterise the main geological impacts that occurred to this area and lead to the status we have now!
3. What do you think, is it predominantly the physical, the chemical or the biological impact that caused and still causes the forming of the pillars? Explain your answer with the materials mainly occurring in the area!
4. How do you think the "First & Highest Natural Bridge" might have been formed?
5. Find out the length, width, thickness and height of the bridge over the ground!
6. It would be great to see a photo of you close to or on the first natural bridge. This is NOT compulsary, though.
Not too much rain, good views, happy hunting!
By the way, do the right thing in this vulnerable environment, bring a plastic bag along and practice
