Metsä tarjoaa asuinpaikan monille eläinlajeille. Suomen metsille, kuten tällekin metsäalueelle, tyypillisiä eläinlajeja ovat monet pikku linnut, kuten rastaat ja peipot sekä nisäkkäistä orava, jänis ja metsämyyrä. Alueella tavattavia harvinaisuuksia puolestaan ovat eräät suurempikokoiset lintulajit, kuten pöllöt ja kanalinnut sekä petoeläimet, kuten supikoira, kettu ja ilves. Ja tavataanpa tälläkin alueella toisinaan myös Suomen suurimpia eläimiä eli hirviä ja ahkeria joessa patojaan rakentelevia majavia.
Metsien eläimet ovat kautta aikojen olleet suomalasille tärkeä osa jokapäiväistä ravintoa. Muinaisille suomalaisille metsänhaltija Tapio oli kaikkien metsäneläinten herra, jolta ennen metsälle lähtöä käytiin metsässä hiljentyen pyytämässä opastusta saaliin luokse. Tähän loitsurituaaliin kuului tärkeänä osana värikäs metsänhaltijan maarittelu, metsämaiseman kauneuden ja saaliin määrän ylenpalttinen liioittelu. Nykyisin metsästysonnea pidetään yllä riistanhoidon avulla, johon kuuluu osana mm. riistaeläinten talviruokinta.
Forest provides home for many animal species. Common animal species in Finland, and also in this specific forest area, are different small birds, such as thrush and finch as well as mammals such as a squirrel, hare and bank vole. Among to the rarities seen in this area are for example some bigger birds, such as hawk and fowl as well as some beasts like raccoon dog, fox and the eurasian lynx. And every now and then one may also be able to see the biggest of all Finland’s animals, elk passing trough here.
For the Finns the wild animals of the forests have always been an important part of their everyday nourishment. For the ancient Finns the lord of all the wild animals was the forest divinity named Tapio, from whom hunters asked for help to find prey before actually going to hunt. In this ritual it was important to wheedle the forest divinity in as many ways as possible and to exaggerate the beauty of the nature and the amount of the desired prey. Nowadays good hunting luck is assured with games’ winterfeeding, which is a part of the Finnish game management.
