Permission to place this cache has been granted by the church.
It is a nice easy cache within the grounds of the church. You do not need to go close to any graves to look for the cache.
Michaelstone-y-fedw, Llanfihangel-y-fedw in Welsh translates as 'The church of Michael of the Birch Tree'. It is also thought that the name may be derived from two Saints, Michael and Medwy
As you walk through the gates of the church take a moment to look at the second grave on your left hand side inscribed with the name of Elizabeth Mackie Hess. She was the first wife of Carl Hess, whose son by his second marriage was the Nazi Party's Deputy Leader, Rudolf Hess. When Hess flew to Britain during the war he was captured in Scotland and imprisoned in Maindiff Court in Abergavenny. It is believed that Hess never knew how close he was to his relative's grave. Had Elizabeth not died then it is highly likely that Rudolf would never have been born and history may have been very different.
St. Michael's is a beautiful country church. If you would like to take a look around but find the church locked ask in the pub next door for the key, if you look the right sort they may trust you with it!
The exact history of the church is not known but it is likely that Christianity has been practised here for nearly two thousand years.
The church bells were recently refurbished and for the first time since their installation in 1782 made to ring ‘full-circle’ again.
Do take a look at the oak tree in the pub car park, it is thought to be the oldest in south east Wales and is about 800 years old
Inside the cache is an unregistered trackable for the FTF and a good supply of geckos, please help yourself to one.
