This cache is located in Orchard Grove Cemetery in memory of Gene Kenney. The historic cemetery was founded in 1848 and is the resting place for many of the pioneers who first settled in this part of Washington County. Over the years, the cemetery became overrun with many broken and misplaced headstones. As vice president of the Farmington Historical Society, Gene made it his personal mission to restore the cemetery. Gene loved history and felt a draw towards people and things of the past. He always believed that every stone had a story, and he hated that the cemetery had fallen into disrepair and that the names and stories of the people buried there were being forgotten. He started the restoration process by researching the history of the cemetery. He discovered that some of the people buried in Orchard Grove descended from the Mayflower pilgrims, others were veterans in wars as far back as 1812, and many were among the first settlers of the state of Wisconsin. After completing his research, Gene spent countless hours locating the broken stones, repairing them, and replacing them in their original places. Gene died in 2014 at the age of 84, shortly after he completed the restoration. Thanks to his work, the cemetery is now a peaceful little spot nestled in the beautiful countryside of Washington County. The cache is medium in size and contains a pencil. After you find it, take a moment to explore the cemetery and take in the stories of the people buried here (some of which are described in the cache). In memory of Eugene Kenney (1929-2014)
