Intermediate Dogbane Traditional Cache

Intermediate Dogbane is another "Dog" cache for Tundra Wolf and his Aussie Buddies. The flowers are less pink than the Spreading Dogbane and the lobes don't curve back. Another P &G.

Intermediate Dogbane

Apocynum × floribundum, the Intermediate dogbane, is a member of family Apocynaceae. It is widespread across Canada, the United States, and northern Mexico.

Intermediate dogbane is believed to be of hybrid origin because its characteristics are intermediate between A. cannabinum (Dogbane) and A. androsaemifolium (Spreading dogbane)

Very good cordage can be made from Dogbane. 

There are actually 4 plants that are commonly referred to as "dogbane", and they are very similar:

    •    Spreading Dogbane (Apocynum androsaemifolium)

    •    Intermediate Dogbane (Apocynum medium)

    •    Indian Hemp (Apocynum cannabinum)

    •    Clasping-leaved Dogbane (Apocynum sibiricium)

The part of the plant that is used to make cordage is the fibers in the "bark" or "skin" of the stalks. The time of year to collect the fibers is late fall. Earlier, and the plant is still alive. The fibers have to dry out so they will detach from the plant easily. As well, the fibers aren't as strong until the plant dies.

Please note that dogbane is poisonous to ingest (eat). So when you're working with dogbane, wash your hands before eating.

The cache is a camoed "Micro" with a snap on/pry off cap. Please make sure it's sealed all around when you are done. It holds only a rolled log with the required rubber band and a tiny zip lock bag. The rubber band on your finger will help keep it handy, once you have rolled up the log again. Then it will fit easily in the bag and cache. BYOP please, and no tweezers, they kill the plastic.
