This is a well known former coffin road going from Glen Falloch to the old church in Balquhidder where Rob Roy is buried. Considering the people who walked this would have been carrying a full coffin, the distance and height climbed is amazing. It must have been a real relief to them when they got to the atmospherically named high point of Bealach nan Corp (pass of the corpses).
William Roy, in his military survey of 1747-55, marks the road along the south shore of Loch Voil as the principal route to Balquhidder. However, this must have been quickly replaced as the road on the north shore of Loch Voil is the only route depicted in James Stobie's map of the Counties of Perth and Clackmannan (1783). Therefore, the coffin road probably originally went by the south road, but later was replaced by a road on the north shore.
From the cache itself there is a breathtaking view of Loch Katrine and Loch Voil at different sides.
This cache is to mark our, close university friends trip from Inverarnan to Loch Voil hostel which was our last trip just before everyone went apart to different places to seek hapiness after university.
About the cache
You can either take easy route or the hard route. The easy route starts from the parking area in the east and follows car road. Later you might need to get your feet wet by crossing the Allt a'Chuilinn. I suggest to go a bit higher where it narrows. There are loads of sheep around the road so keep your dogs on the lead. Later you will need to keep straight west and go on to the gradual rising until you reach the top. The hard way to get there is to start at Beinglas farm, Inverarnan. Right after you cross the Ben Glas Burn over the Bridge you need turn sharp left and follow south riverside where steep rising continues for couple hours. Until you reach the top there is footpath visible. At the top easiest is just to follow electric wires over head.
