Geocache Description:

This should be a relatively easy find in a pocket park of Anchorage.

Kanchee is of Dena'ina decent from qanchee meaning 'porcupine'. Many of the local parks have been named after an animal of some sort. I used to play in this park as a child and into my teens walking to and from Clark Junior High School. As a child, it was well known in the community as Spider Park because it used to have a very large rope spider web that you could climb on. In placing a cache here, I talked with a woman with children playing here. She was about my age and also remembers calling it Spider Park. We both still do! In trying to do the research for this park, there wasn't a whole lot to go on. I do remember my mother calling it Porcupine Park, never Kanchee Park. Perhaps she wasn't able to pronounce it. Whatever the case, the new sign doesn't show the meaning of the name so preserve it while you can!

This property was purchased in 1956 with bond and Land & Water Conservation Fund funding. The park was recently updated with new play equipment and landscaping. Amenities to come and enjoy:

  • Accessible play equipment for 2-12 year olds
  • Sledding hill
  • Picnic shelter and tables
  • On-street parking
