The expression of red colour replacing the black in Holsteins is a function of a recessive gene in the normal black and white Holstein. The trait became more common in the U.S. when animals were imported from Canada in the 1960s. Soon the Red and White Dairy Cattle Association began registry procedures in the United States and thus the Red Holstein was born.
Other than color, the two breeds are virtually the same.
