Life was extremely hard in the early days for the women on the land according to Violet Ebberton, a grand-daughter of Campbell Whalan. “We had to go down to the river when the wells dried up to do our washing there. The clothes were boiled in kerosene tins or iron boilers over a fire in the shade of a tree. Everybody had their bath in the rounds tubs.”
