Geocache Description:

This cache is part of my 'Historic Holymoorside' series, a group of multi caches hidden in historic locations around Holymoorside.

The cache is not at the above co-ords

The cache can be found at N053 13.ABC W001 29.DEF.

To find the answers to this cache you will either need to visit the locations or research the answers. This is not a quickly solved cache, you have to visit some of the locations but also do some research, some of which is not on the web. The solving of this cache may take a few hours, so keep this in mind when attempting the cache. TIP: The web may not be the best source of info for some of the questions.

A. The building here used to be the original primitive methodist chapel, which has since been converted into 2 houses. It was replaced by a (now closed) chapel on New Road. What is the last digit of the date that the original chapel was founded? (answer Aa)

About 50 yards down the road is a square shaped building. This was used as a pub called the Woodman's Arms for a short period, run by William Hays whilst the outbuildings were a dames school. What was the year that records show a public house in the village that was run by William Hays? 1831 = 4,  1860 = -3, 1862 = 0, 1884 = -5 (answer Ab)

(Aa)+(Ab)= the answer to A.

B. On the other side of the road you will see Kendall's stores, which date back over 100 years. This is the local and only surviving shop in the village. At one time there 3 shops, one on Loads Road (Patman), one on Holymoor Road and one here. In the triangle of houses up until 1910 there was a tea room, though the only memory of it is a single photo. What is the year that Kendal store was extended? 1942= -1, 1957 = 6, 1959 = 5, 1963= 1. (Answer Ba)

From here, walk up New Road and stop when you find the first house on the right han side with a plaque on it. This and the ones in the row were built for the millworkers. For more info see my other cache, 'Historic Holymoorside - URC and Cotton Mill'. Take note of the number of the house which has the plaque on it, as you need this to find the answer. 32 = 2, 34 = 4, 36 = -2, 38 = -4. (Answer Bb)

(Ba)-(Bb)= the answer to B.

C. Here is one of my favourite locations in Holymoorside, Ashmore Farm. It is in a lovely spot at the side of Loads Brook and there are lots of ruins in the area. In the 1700s this building was a corn mill, with the waterwheel at the rear. It was also possible that lead smelting took place here aswell. In recent times the wheel was replaced with a turbine under one of the barn floors, although it was never very successful. I believe that the farm is now owned by one of the houses at High Flatts, a group of cottages between Loads Road and Windy Fields Road. What is the name on the plaque? How many letters are in the mill's name? (answer = Ca)

A little further down next to the pub there are 4 modern houses. Behind is an interesting wall with ruins of a circular tower and a fire place. At the top of the wall are some ruined barns on Windy Field Road. Another fellow cacher has suggested that this was some sort of smelting place, and that the circular tower is a kiln. This also explains the black marks on the wall - maybe the building burnt down? Until several years ago this area was a grassy slope which often flooded, due to it being so close to the Loads Brook. My friends and I used to refer to this area as 'Holymoor Castle' because of the ruins, although there was never a castle here. What year were the houses built in? 2012 = 1, 2013 = 2, 2014 = -3, 2015 = -1. (answer = Cb)

(Ca)+(Cb)= the answer to C.

 D. At the top of Heather Way used to be a well where residents would throw pennies in and make a wish. The field where the well was is often very waterlogged. From the well a stream used to run down to the river Hipper, which made the ground wet so only bungalows were safe to build.  Near the end of Heather Way you will find an alleyway heading onto Gallery Lane. Turn onto the alleyway and make note of how many sides the first lamppost you come to has. 1 (circular) = 1, 4 (square) = 4, 6 (Hexagonal) = 6, 8 (octagonal) = 8. (Answer = Da)

Walk along the footpath past the site of the old PennyWell and you join Pennywell Drive. What is the number on the lamppost at the end of the path? 49342 = 0, 49345 = 1, 49842 = 2, 49845 = -1. (Answer = Db)

(Da)+(Db)= the answer to D.

E. Next to the pub there are 2 garages. This was once the site of the villagers first and only chippy, which was very successful for the 11 years it was open. The business came to a dramatic end on a bank holiday Monday when the chip pan caught fire and the shop burnt out. It has sadly never been replaced, apart from a mobile chip van that called here in 2011/12. What is the difference between the last 2 digits of the year it burned down? (Answer = Ea)

A little further round the corner is a grassy track, which is often missed. The rack leads to High Flatts, 2 cottages which have spectacular views over the village. Behind the houses is a field called Backside. What is the difference between the last 2 digits of the field on the 1876 OS map? (Answer = Eb)

(Ea)x(Eb)= the answer to E.

F. There is very little written about the flood which damaged crops and buildings in Holymoorside. The flood happened when ponds up in windy fields near Chander Hill were damaged, sending water gusing down the Loads Valley. This seriously affected the corn mills and farming in the area. What is the last digit of the year of the flood? (Answer = Fa)

How many ponds were there in the windy fields area take away the third digit of the year of the flood? (Answer = Fb)

(Fa)+(Fb)= the answer to F.
