THIS AREA IS CURRENTLY NOT OPEN TO THE PUBLIC as the bridge is considered to be unsafe for travel. The current timeframe for this repair work to be finished is in the fall of 2022.
An easy, paved hike from one city to another with outstanding views of the Piscataqua River. Special thanks to inevergiveup for the simple, yet elegant cache name.
So a little information for your walk out...
This is the General Sullivan Bridge. It was built in 1935 and spans 1585 feet. On a number of occasions, repairs were planned, but never implemented due to costs. Please see the log entry by royswkr (thanks!) below for some additional history.
The bridge is scheduled to be rehabilitated starting in late 2018 at an estimated cost of $26 million and will be the final stage of this area's overall construction project. Opponents of saving the bridge (including the Coast Guard) regard it as a navigational hazard. Proponents claim that it belongs on the National Register of Historic Places due in part to its innovative and later copied design. Despite its tired look, the bridge was scheduled to be inspected in June of 2016 and remained open after that date.
At one point traffic ran across both the new, adjacent bridge (called Little Bay Bridge) and the GS bridge simultaneously. Now however, the General is reserved for foot and bicycle traffic use only, with the possibility of emergency vehicle use in the future.
The Piscataqua River below is the third fastest-flowing navigable river in the world and, needless to say, has a treacherous current. As you walk south to the cache, the small cove ahead and to your right is Trickys Cove. To your direct right is Broad Cove (just behind the marina) which lies adjacent to a strip of land called Fox Point. As you near the cache, you should be able to look to the right of Fox Point and see the smallish Goat Island in the middle of the river where the Bellamy River joins the Piscataqua.
Okay. That's enough history. Don't do anything crazy (like jumping fences) while up here. This is an easy grab from the main path once you get to the coordinates. You are looking for something bison-tube-sized.
Congrats to inevergiveup on her first FTF. She waited 12 hours after the cache went live before doing a little night caching and venturing out for this one.
