Geocache Description:

Jerome Lester Horwitz, A.K.A. Jerome Howard, A.K.A. Babe, A.K.A. Curly. A cache introducing the wives of the most famous stooge.

Curly’s first wife was Julia Rosenthal, on August 5th, 1930. The marriage lasted only a few months, and very little is known of the circumstances surrounding the marriage and subsequent divorce.

According to an interview with Bernice Herzog, daughter of Curly’s older brother Jack, Curly’s first wife was “a short, little thing with a real 20’s hairdo… with short sides and bangs, a real flapper.” She went on to say that there was talk of an annulment, but that may have been is mother Jennie’s way of protecting Jerome, as divorce after months of marriage in those days was deemed a disgrace.

Curly’s second wife was Elaine Ackerman. Curly’s father, Sol, attempted and failed to set them up on a blind date, but fate worked mysteriously, and the two ended up meeting and were married on June 7, 1937 in a simple ceremony in his parents’ home.

According to an interview with Elaine back in 1985, she was working for a furrier in Los Angeles when Curly came in and was introduced to her. Nothing happened at that point, but then later that same day, a doctor friend of hers asked her out on a double date, and the other date involved Curly himself. Fate took over, and the romance blossomed. Unable to recall many funny moments in their marriage, she said: “Most of my life with him wasn’t that funny – even the honeymoon. Curly took me to this dude ranch near Reno. I spent my whole honeymoon on horseback – and I hate horses”.

Elaine and Curly separated in 1940 and divorced on July 11 of that year. They had one child, Marilyn, born in 1938.

In 1945, Curly’s lifestyle was getting the better of him, and his performance on set was deteriorating. Moe forced him to be admitted to the hospital where he was diagnosed with hypertension and obesity, among other things. Moe was convinced that Curly’s deterioration was due to his recent divorce and loneliness without Elaine, so he introduced Curly to a relative of the theater manager. Her name was Marion Buxbaum, and Curly took to her instantly. They were married on October 17, 1945, after having known each other for two weeks. Instantly he became a stepfather to Marion’s ten year old son from a previous marriage.

The marriage to Marion was a disaster in all ways, and after only three months on January 14th, 1946, they separated and Curly sued for divorce. The judge in the divorce proceedings went so far as to call Marion a “gold digger” and ordered her to leave Los Angeles county. Some quotes from the transcripts of those proceedings from Marion: “He used filthy, vulgar and vile language, kept two vicious dogs. He shouted at waiters in cafes, pushed, struck, and kicked me, put cigars out in the sink.” And Curly complained: “She refused to live with me. She wanted half of everything, called me bad names. I married her two weeks after meeting her and gave her $250 for clothes, $3750 for a mink coat, and $850 wristwatch and a $2000 Tiffany bracelet.” Marion wound up with half of everything Curly had, including a new house that he had bought just for her.

Devastated by this, Curly’s health worsened. He suffered a stroke that left him partially paralyzed. But just a couple of years later in 1947, he met his fourth wife, Valerie Newman, at a nightclub.

On July 30th, 1947, they were married at the local courthouse. Friends and relatives said that Val was “the best thing to ever happen to Curly”. They had one daughter together in 1948. The marriage lasted less than five years until Curly’s death in 1952.

Now subtract 11 from the computed North coordinate and subtract 5 from the computed west coordinate. (Thanks to finders for letting me know it was off a bit)

The container is decent sized, and could hold travel bugs.

Have fun!
