The area now covered by the retail area of Festival Park, was, for the summer of 1986, the market area of the National Garden Festival. Stalls selling anything and everything to do with gardens, plants, flowers, and pretty much anything at all outdoors, all sold their wares here. Along with the Festival Hall, housing changing exhibits throughout the festival. These stairs gave access to the garden areas from the market area, and vice versa of course.
