Geocache Description:

The 1866 Oaks Colliery Disaster was the worst mining disaster in Victorian Britain and remains the worst in English history. Over 380 men and boys were killed in a series of huge underground explosions.

The remaining Barnsley Main headgear and buildings date from later developments on the site of the Oaks Colliery. These buildings were first laid out in the late 19th century when local glass magnate Dan Rylands bought the colliery.

This was the site of the cupola ventilation shaft of the Oaks Colliery. One of the last men to be rescued after the Oaks Disaster was George Tasker, his job was to ensure the fires which helped ventilate the colliery were working effectively. He was found largely unhurt holding a dead cat in his arms.

This is one of three geocaches that make up a small trail relating to the Oaks Colliery Disaster. You are looking for a magnestic nano.

The Dearne Valley Landscape Partnership is working with local geocachers to develop a number of routes.
