An historical sketch of an ancient Israelite Prophet: Obadiah
Timeframe:
Obadiah lived during the 8th century B.C.; the Book of Obadiah, itself, was likely written between 848 and 840 B.C.
Family:
Obadiah was an Edomite by birth. He later converted to Judaism and became a disciple of Elijah, who was the steward of King Ahab's household. According to the Talmud, Obadiah is said to have been a convert to Judaism from Edom, a descendant of Eliphaz, the friend of Job.
Mission:
Obadiah, the shortest book in the Old Testament, is only 21 verses long. Obadiah is a prophet who uses this opportunity to condemn wrong-doing against the laws. The Edomites are descendants of Esau and the Israelites are descendants of his twin brother, Jacob.
