Geocache Description:

David's Fort is the site of a medieval homestead surrounded by a moat. It's an impressive structure once you get there & well worth the effort.

David's Fort is the site of a medieval homestead, which is still surrounded by a clearly distinguishable (and mostly functional) moat.
On old maps, roads are shown going past nearby down to the River Conon where there was once a ford across the braided river.

The entrance track & waypoint leads you to the access point over the moat to the fort. It's definitely worth taking a wander along the faint tracks leading round fallen trees & across the moat to the Fort before heading on to the cache site.
The cache itself is adjacent to a small wall, with a faint stream/channel nearby - the Balavil Wood Pond outflow, which might possibly have been used to run a small mill. An old forest track runs beside a pond possibly of the same period as the fort. Archaeological surveys have indicated that there is evidence of other shallow ponds which have now filled in with the passage of time. It is thought that they were once used for soaking flax before processing into clothing.

Unfortunately, a lot of the area has been used for logging/forestry and so the movement of machinery has gouged up the landscape in some areas and made the fainter paths/stream channels even harder to decipher.
