Geocache Description:

This cache overlooks three fish traps or Yairs to the west at Torgorm Point that were probably built over 2000 years ago during the iron age period. They are best seen at mid tide as they can be less distinct at low tide.

A cache and dash at a public carpark. This is the first of a set relating to easily overlooked coastal archaeology along the Beauly Firth .

This cache overlooks three fish traps or Yairs to the west at Torgorm Point that were probably built over 2000 years ago during the iron age period. They are best seen at mid tide as generally less distinct at low tide.
The yairs consisted of stone dykes and could also have included a wattle structure on top. They trapped fish on an outgoing tide as the fish headed back out to sea after feeding within the firth. The fish's instinct prevented it from turning round and heading back against the flow to the opening of the trap and escape. The surrounding area is also rich with other Iron age sites including hill forts, duns and round houses.

The easiest access to the cache is from the corner of the carpark.
