Geocache Description:

Stilton Lane

A little known road between Picton and Tahmoor, the southern end of which gives commanding views of the western side of Picton and the beginning of Redbank Creek.

124 years ago, on 18 March 1893, William's Coull's Estate "Stilton" between Redbank Creek and Myrtle Creek Picton went on sale.

Born in Scotland in c1823, William Coull arrived in Sydney in the 1850s. By 1870 he was in Picton working as a storekeeper and ran the post office service until 1881. He owned the George Inn and the land it stood on. He also owned Coull's building in Argyle Street and over 1,000 acres at Razorback in addition to the Stilton land. He married Jane Jones in Mitagong in 1883 at the age of 60. His estate was valued at eighteen thousand pounds on his death on 8 March 1889. He was buried at St Marks Church Picton. Coull Street Picton is named after him. Jane Coull died in 1922 at the age of 80.

Over the years Wollondilly Shire Council minutes are littered with requests  to  upgrade the road. In 1914 it was reported as “very rough and covered with ( tree ) stumps”. Over 100 years later only the top of the hill is bitumen sealed with the remainder being a gravel road.

Parking for the cache is at the  top of the hill with a short walk downhill to GZ Pencil required.

An extraction tool may be required to obtain the cache.

Congrats on FTF Team Buxton.
