In the early 2000s, Westhampton voted unanimously to build a larger, more sustainable library and to repurpose the old library for office space. The project received a $1.064 million grant from the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC), and Westhampton residents banded together to aggregate the remaining funds needed through resources and fundraising over a period of several years.
In April of 2009, the final plans were released and Westhampton sought bids to build the new addition. The library opened the fall of 2011, before its actual completion in the spring of 2012.
The library is designed to look like an old New England home and barn. The “house” is actually an 1814 home that was donated in 1941 to the nearby Congregational Church for use as a parsonage. The complex won’t have any of the draftiness of a New England home and barn, however, thanks to good insulation and new, energy-efficient windows.
The library complex was paid for with state aid, $106,000 from the sale of the former Center School and lots of donations. People also contributed labor, putting in thousands of hours of volunteer work to make the cupola, design the weathervane, paint the complex inside and out and landscape the site.
