Dunbrody Trail: Trail Head - Dunbrody's legacy Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Eclectic Penguin: As this has been languishing in a state of disrepair for some time and now unsurprisingly gets a DNF...

I no longer live in Ireland so I can't replace this so I'm archiving. When originally placed, there was quite a big ambitious series of caches ready to be put in place around here to mark out several trails but ... things didn't pan out.

Geocache Description:

Part of a series of caches placed for Laken Hill & Dunbrody Forest Trails.

Red Loop: Dunbrody Forest Trail.

A basic hide very near to the suggested start of several trails in the New Ross area.

This forest was planted to replace the larch and Douglas Fir trees that were felled to create the Dunbrody Famine Ship, which was used to carry passengers from Ireland to North America, desparate to escape the potato famine. The original Dunbrody was wrecked in 1875, however, a full scale replica can be seen today in nearby New Ross.

Very close to the cache and just to the right of the entrance is the insect hotel.

Not too far from the cache location are the Fairy Homes, a small village of the fair flok - you can see this by climbing the nearby steps - very popular with the little people in families!

This cache is the first of the Red Loop walk and is also the starting point for other walks including the blue Laken Hill Side Trail which takes you to some incredible views at the top of the hill and also with the 1798 memorial.
