Eg havi verið við havsins botn
og stundum uppi við ský.
Hann sum í míni fótspor stígur,
hann lær ikki alla tíð.
Nakað soleiðis verður tikið til í Gongurólvs kvæðið. Men nógv er broytt síðan tá. Í dag hava flestu okkara ferðast uppi við ský, har flogfør og tyrlur knýta ferðasamband millum oyggjar og lond. Og nú kunnu vit eisini ferðast turrskødd við havsins botn.
Síðan vegagerð byrjaði í Føroyum fyri júst 100 árum síðan – í 1916 á Sandoynni – er veganetið støðugt útbygt. Seinastu 50 árini eru fleiri stór vegarbeiði gjørd, eitt nú fyrstu tunlarnir í Suðuroynni og í Borðoynni í 1960unum, brúgvin um Streymin í 1973 og Norðskálatunnilin í 1974; síðani vórðu fleiri tunlar gjørdir gjøgnum fjøll og byrgingar um sund. Við Vágatunlinum, sum varð liðugur í 2002, varð enn eitt samferðsluligt frambrot, tá tunnilin undir havsins botn avloysti ferjuna. Og í 2006 varð Norðoyatunnilin tikin í nýtslu, sum bindur saman Eysturoy og Borðoy, og harvið er koyrandi av Viðareiði til Gásadals ella til Kirkjubøar. Har tunnilin er djúpast er hann 150 metrar undir sjóvarmálanum. Dýpið í sjónum yvir tunlinum er í mesta lagi 103 metrar.
Í Gongurólvs kvæði verður sagt frá norðmonnum í Tróndheimi, ið lata byggja knørr at sigla til Grønlands. Í Íslandi kemur Gongurólvur við sum stýrimaður. Teir koma í ódnarveður, missa mastur og segl og reka norður í Trøllabotn, har risar beina fyri allar manningini uttan trimum monnum. Teir fara til gongu men leggjast fyri og doyggja í kulda, til Gongurólvur er einsamallur eftir. Hann sær hús við eldstaði og fer inn. Har situr ein kvinna, sum vísir seg at vera systir hansara. Hon er tikin av risanum. Hon goymir Gongurólv, tá risin kemur aftur at húsum. Risin luktar mannabein, og hon leggur gott orð inn fyri Gongurólv og sigur, at hann er bróðir sín. Risin lovar at eira Gongurólv, og harvið verður tað. Risar halda orð – ikki av ongum sigur orðafellið “trúgvur sum trøllið”! Eftir at hava verið hjá risanum í nøkur ár, fer Gongurólvi at leingjast heim. Risin ber hann tá eftir havsins botni til Írlands, har hann setur hann upp á turt. Eftir at hava verið í Írlandi eina tíð, fær ein drotning har ein risafugl at flyta Gongurólvi til Tróndheims í Noregi, har Gongurólvur sigur søgu sína, verður kristnaður og doyr.
Í dag er tað ikki sama avbjóðingin at ferðast – hvørki við havsins botn ella uppi við ský.
Í tunlinum er sjálvsagt onki GPS-samband, og tí er koyrivegleiðing frá uppgivnu knattstøðuni til har cachurin liggur.
Koyr gjøgnum tunnilin úr Leirvík móti Klaksvík. Steðga við stóra víkiplássið høgrumegin, sum er miðskeiðis undir litfagra ljóslistarverkinum hjá Tróndi Patursyni. Hetta er lægsta stað í tunlinum, og beint hinumegin vegin er pumpustøðin. Ver sera varin fyri ferðsluni, og hav í huga, at tað kann duna rættiliga hart í tunlinum. Tú eigur ikki at ganga tvørtur um vegin fyri at taka henda cachin! Tað er onki forboð móti at steðga í hesum tunlinum!
Hesin cachur er lagdur 8. juli 2016 á 100 ára føðingardegin Mikkjals Helmsdal, civilverkfrøðingur, landsverfrøðingur 1948 – 1988, ið gekk á odda at útbyggja føroyska veganetið hesi árini.

I have been at the bottom of the Sea
And sometimes up at the skies.
He who walks in my footsteps
will not laugh all the time!
So it is said in the traditional Faroese ballad “Gongurólvs kvæði”. But a lot has changed since then. Nowadays airplanes and helicopters connect Islands and Countries. And now we also can travel with dry shoes at the bottom of the Sea.
Since building of roads started in Faroes a 100 years ago – in 1916 in Sandoy – the road system continuously has been extended. The last 50 years many big road works are done. The first tunnels in Suðuroy and in Borðoy in the sixties, the bridge between Streymoy and Eysturoy and the Norðskálatunnilin in Eysturoy in the seventies, more tunnels and dikes in the eighties and nineties. When the subsea tunnel “Vágatunnilin” between Streymoy and Vágar was opened in 2002, it was an infrastructural breakthrough, and in 2006 this subsea tunnel “Norðoyatunnilin” was opened, connecting Borðoy and Eysturoy, and thus making road connection from Viðareiði to Gásadalur or Kirkjubøur. At its deepest, the tunnel is 150meter below sea level. Depth in the sea above is at most 103 m.
The traditional ballad Gongurólvs kvæði tells about some Norwegians in Trondheim building a big boat for sailing to Greenland. In Iceland they pick up Gongurólvur to be their skipper. They hit a violent storm, loose mast and sails, and are carried by the wind and current to “Trøllabotnur”- the Giants bay. There some Giants kill all the men except Gongurólvur and two more. They start walking home, but die in the cold, all except Gongurólvur. He sees a house and a fire within, and in he goes. There is a woman, who appears to be his sister, who captivated by the giant. She hides Gongurólvur, but when the giant arrives at night, he can smell a man and wants him for supper. She begs for his life, telling it is her brother, and the giant then admits to spare the man. And giants always keep their promises! After staying at the giant for some years, Gongurólvur wants to go home. The giant then carries him at the bottom of the sea to Ireland and puts him on the shore. There he dwells for some time, and at last a princess there makes a giant bird to bring him back to Trondheim. There he tells his story, is Christianised and then dies.
Nowadays it is not that hard to travel – neither at the bottom of the sea nor up at the skies.
In the tunnel there is of course no gps connection, and hence this driving guidance from the published position to the cache:
Drive through the tunnel from Leirvík toward Klaksvík. Stop at the large stopping place in your right side in the midst of the coloured light art by Tróndur Paturson. This is the lowest point in the tunnel, and on the opposite side of road is the bottom pumping station. Be very careful for the traffic – and there might be a lot roar in the tunnel. You are not expected to cross the road in order to pick this cache! It is not prohibited to stop in this tunnel!
