US Congressman. He graduated from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut in 1846, studied law, and became an attorney in New York City in 1848. In 1862 he joined the 37th Regiment of the New York National Guard as a Captain, and served until the end of the Civil War in 1865. In 1872 he was elected to the US House as a Republican and served one term, 1873 to 1875. He did not run for reelection and returned to practicing law in New York City. Throughout his life Scudder remained an active supporter of Trinity College, including serving on its Board of trustees for over twenty years. He was also a benefactor of the Town of Huntington Public Library in the 1870s, donating many of the books that began its collection. Henry J. Scudder was the uncle of Townsend Scudder, who also served as a Congressman.
