Geocache Description:

Take a short stroll off the main road to Tamworth's first cemetery. This original cemetery was in use in the early 1800's, after the Australian Agricultural Company took its first men to the Peel Valley in 1834. It was located next to a butchers shop, the building of which still stands as 28 Bridge Street. The small site, approximately half an acre, was considered to be adequate for the population of Tamworth at the time, however a lack of fresh food and vegetables caused high incidences of illness and high mortality in the area, and as a result the cemetery was at capacity after only 15 years of use. Although this was the case, burials continued at the cemetery for a further 13 years before an alternate location was chosen, which is the current cemetery across from the showground. The lack of headstones in the old cemetery is due to the frequent flooding, and most of the headstones were removed. Now the site is distinguishable by the bamboo, and if you look closely you can find old pieces of fencing used for the original site among the bush and bamboo. The cache is a small box with some swappables, some off the track walking and looking will be required but nothing too strenuous.
