Castanet Traditional Cache

This cache is one of a number of music instrument related caches placed on the southern section of the R540 road in Gauteng province, South Africa. Sometimes caches in the country are more enjoyable than in the city.

Castanets are a percussion instrument, used in Kalo Moorish, Spanish and Portuguese music. The instrument consist of a pair of concave shells joined on one edge by a string. They are held in the hand and used to produce clicks for rhythmic accents or a ripping or rattling sound consisting of a rapid series of clicks.
