Geocache Description:

You're invited to take a minute to enjoy the beautiful mural in front of you which depicts one of the early methods of salmon fishing at the mouth of the Columbia River -- pulling seine nets with horses.

In 1895, horses were first used to pull the seine nets to haul catches of salmon, which had previously been pulled by hand. A horse seine crew could employ from two to forty people and use up to seven teams of horses. Seine work was a good summer job for college students, and the crews had names denoting a crew characteristic, such as the Oregon State College Seine Crew.

In 1948, horse and hand seines were outlawed by initiative petition in Oregon. The seines had been outlawed in Washington in 1934 because of corporate competition with independent fishing families.

The cache was placed with permission from the adjacent business. Please be respectful and take care to rehide the cache so it won't be discovered by muggles!
