OAHT 1605: Genesee Lakes

Genesee Lakes

The Upper (Otis Lake), Middle and Lower Genesee lakes are fairly low with swampy areas. Geological reports state that the Middle and Lower lakes are two glacial ice pits separated by a ridge of sand and gravel. The ridge is now Genesee Lake Road. The waters of these two lakes escape by percolation (the slow movement of water through the pores in soil or permeable rock).
Middle Genesee has about 102 acres and the lower lake has about 66 acres. The upper lake, sometimes called Otis Lake, is private, but the middle and lower lakes get considerable fishing pressure in the summer months, as the lower lake has been stocked with trout since 1954.
An 1874 map shows the Middle and Lower lakes as being one lake with a sand bar between them. Gus Pabst created a road here during the years when he owned all the land on both lakes. The upper lake was known as Otis Lake on early maps but was noted as being changed about 1914 when Pabst also owned that lake.
