Geocache Description:

The Stafford Kayak Cache (SKC) Series, which started in nearby Lake Mooney, has now expanded to the Abel Lake (AL) Reservoir.

You are looking for an infamous TeamSlug type container.

Welcome to Abel Lake Park. A large parking and boat launch area: Located on Kellogg Mill Road (SR-651), west of Mountain View Road (SR-627), this is another fine Stafford County Park and reservoir. The park offers a Stocked fishing area, hiking, and did we mention, the water. Abel Lake Park is open all year, from Dawn to Dusk. A Virginia Fishing License is required when fishing.

Like all Stafford County Reservoirs, no swimming or gas motorized watercraft are allowed. Able Lake only allows Kayaks, Canoes, and small boats equipped with electric trolling motors. This makes for a very serene paddle.

Other than the public boat launch, Able Lake Park has no facilities and parking can get crowded during peak fishing seasons. Trash cans are present, but best to plan on taking your trash with you.

From the Public Boat Launch, Abel Lake Reservoir is about a 2.5 mile paddle to the farthest end. Fortunately, the wonderful views of cliffs and birds typically don’t require traveling that distance, but 5 miles round trip makes for a great morning on the water.

The geological aspect of Abel Lake also bears mentioning. Spanning into both the Long Branch Fault Zone and Dumfries Fault Zone adds to the unique geological features found as one navigates the Abel Lake Reservoir. The Long Branch Fault is a thrust fault, and the Dumfries Fault is a High Angle Fault. One may even cross both faults paddling to and from the placed kayak caches. The first cache was placed near the Long Branch Fault, while one of the more distant caches was placed near the Dumfries Fault.

These are kayak caches and are only accessible by kayak, canoe, or boat with electric motor, though the later may have issues in shallower placements. If you attempt these from land you will get wet, and may even put yourself in unnecessary risk of bodily harm. Please only access these from the water as private property does exist around the reservoir. No need to get out of your kayak unless stated. All were placed while sitting in a kayak.

We hope you enjoy this portion of the SKC Series. No pen, so please bring your own. Please replace as found so others can enjoy into the future. Please practice Cache-In-Trash-Out (CITO) when visiting Abel Lake Park and Reservoir.
