Situated in Ngakoti Street, Urenui, this playground is in a pleasant grassed area, Yandle Park, on the top of a hill overlooking the rivermouth and the sea beyond. There is a stone seat to admire the ocean views, and public toilets are nearby. The park is open all hours and there is no charge. It is just off the main highway, close to the local shopping centre and take-away food shops, and makes an ideal travellers stop. The children can play while the adults eat fish and chips and watch the sunset over the sea.

A great spot to stop, the last bastion of Naki civilisation on the route north. Urenui Village is the last retail outpost before you leave Taranaki (the Waikato/Taranaki regional border is officially the Mohakatino River) and offers all the essentials.. a petrol station, garage, 4SQ supermarket, a pub, cafe, hairdresser, beauty salon, fish & chip shop and a couple of retail boutiques.
But we are here to geocache, so the co-ords should get you to an object a little way back from the viewing area and the playground. It’s a simple park and grab but you are encouraged to stretch your legs, use the facilities and let the kids burn some energy in the playground. Meanwhile, what a view, the estuary is below you and when I was last there we had the pleasure of watching the tidal bore come into the river mouth, OK it’s not the Seven Estuary in the UK but it’s still very cool. lots of tables and seats
