Johnny Logan was born Spemica Lawba, a Shawnee Indian. His parents were Chaquiweshe, called Chaqui, ;The Mink, and Tecumesa, the sister of Tecumseh.
He was taken prisoner as a boy when his village, Chillicothe, was destroyed by the Kentucky Militia commanded by American General Benjamin Logan, in 1786. General Logan soon after adopted him and gave him the name Johnny Logan. Returning to his people when peace was restored, Johnny Logan later became a spy for the Americans in the War of 1812 and died as a result of his wounds inflicted by the enemy during a mission to prove his loyalty to the Americans.
He was buried within the earthen rampart of Fort Defiance, the only Indian in Ohio History to be buried with full United States Military Honors.
