Geocache Description:

Glen Helen is the legacy of alumnus Hugh Taylor Birch, who, in 1929, donated the wooded glen to Antioch College in memory of his daughter, Helen. With this gift, the College accepted the responsibility of preserving the land in perpetuity. Additional gifts have expanded the preserve, which now encompasses 1000 acres, all accessible from a 20-mile network of footpaths.


This 2 stage multi will take you into the heart of Glen Helen. The cooridnates for Stage 1 will take you to a memorial plaque with words from the namesake of Glen Helen - Helen Birch Bartlett. You will use this plaque to get the coordinates for the final cache.

Glen Helen is open to the public 365 days a year. They offer Nature programs, guided hikes, and other interpretative experiences for families and individuals throughout the year.

Trails are open from dawn to dusk. Visitors are welcome to explore the 20+ miles of trails from sunrise to sunset, 365 days a year. When hiking in the evening, please allow an appropriate amount of time to exit the forest before sundown. Hikers found within the Glen after sunset, are subject to a trespasser violation.

The Glen Helen Nature Shop and Atrium Gallery are open to the public. The Glen Helen Nature Shop offers nature centered gifts, books, and Glen Helen gear; hours of operation based upon volunteer availability, 10am-4pm.

The Glen Helen Trailside Museum serves as a welcome center. Visitors have an opportunity to visit with the ambassador animals, learn about the Glen, as well as purchase trail maps and Glen gear. Open weekends, 10am-5pm; additional summer hours may be available with volunteer support.

Glen Helen is a private, nonprofit nature preserve, protected by a conservation easement. The easement provides a way to protect the Glen for future generations by providing legal and permanent protections that restrict the type and amount of development that may take place on the property. These restrictions include strict protections for the flora and fauna within the Glen. Removal or destruction of any feature, plant, and or animal is strictly prohibited and may result in the loss of our easement protection, therefore any visitor found to disregard trail guidelines may be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. The Trailside Museum is the weekend welcome center for Glen Helen Nature Preserve. Visitors to are encouraged to stop by before exploring the trails. The museum features hands-on displays and exhibits that are designed to offer visitors an up-close experience with nature. Visitors also have an opportunity to meet our resident ambassador animals, investigate the trail map, and purchase Glen Helen gear. *Additional Glen Helen gear, birding items, and nature/outdoor inspired gifts are available at the Glen Helen Nature Shop, located in the Vernet Ecological Center.

As the starting place for many public family and adult programs, the Trailside Museum offers fun and educational guided programs for all age groups.

The Raptor Center began in 1970 as part of Antioch College's Glen Helen Outdoor Education Center. The Raptor Center includes a classroom area for bird study lessons, an intensive care room, outdoor cages for display of permanently handicapped birds, and flight cages for recuperating birds. The Raptor Center hosts regular programs to encourage a greater understanding, appreciation, and concern for raptors and other wildlife. Presentations are available that cover the special adaptations of birds of prey, general wildlife needs, how humans affect wildlife, and what we can all do to help.

The Outdoor Education Center is dedicated to providing programs for children and adults seeking to develop an appreciation for the natural world, an awareness of environmental problems and the ecological principles that influence them. The Outdoor Education Center is committed to helping students develop improved self-concepts and to refine their interpersonal relationship skills through the Outdoor School Program, EcoCamp, and After School Program as well as other community outreach programming.
