Geocache Description:

Welcome to Marengo Ridge

Marengo Ridge Conservation Area is one of McHenry County’s most popular and treasured areas. It contains over 818 acres of oak and hickory woodlands interspersed with spruce, aspen, ash and sumac groves.

The 2016 Cache Your Way program is over but the cache remains for the fun of it!

About the Site

The Marengo Moraine was created about 24,000 years ago by the Wisconsin glacier.  The ridge is made up of rocks, gravel, sand and finer sediments that were carried within or pushed ahead of the ice sheet as it advanced and left behind as it melted.  At its highest point, the ridge stands 1,050 above sea level. In Marengo Ridge Conservation Area, the area around Shelter #2 offers excellent vantage points for surveying the geological history of the area.

Bat Facts

Bats in flight:  A bat has powerful chest muscles, which it uses to flap its wings. It steers by moving the bones in its fingers and legs to change the wing's shape.

Bat Wings: The bones in the bats' fingers are long and covered by a thin layer of skin stretching between each finger. That forms the top of the wing and ends in a claw. Their thumbs stick out like small claws to grip branches.

Bat Features:  Bats have a variety of head shapes that reflect their feeding habits: Fruit bat – has a long snout and a long tongue to sip nectar and eat fruits. Long eared bat – This bat has large ears that can hear insects' wings flapping. Long nosed bats – These bats have long noses to help them smell the flowers.

Cache Your Way Question

Bats do not necessarily sleep all day.  What other activities will they do during the day?
