Geocache Description:

On the slopes of Tibradden Mountain, County Dublin, stands a stone marked “O'Connell's Rock, 23 July 1823”.
Daniel O'Connell gave an address to the local populace from this rock as they celebrated Garland Sunday that year.

Daniel O’Connell, often known as the Emancipator or the Liberator, was a major Irish political leader at the beginning of the 19th century, best known for campaigning for Catholic emancipation and for arguing for the repeal of the Act of Union, 1800.

The Act of Union was the first piece of law that combined Great Britain and Ireland to create the United Kingdom and was implemented by the British government after the unsuccessful United Irishmen rebellion, aided by the French, in 1798, through which the Irish sought complete independence from Britain.

Born in Co. Kerry in 1775, O’Connell engineered the widespread mobilization of the Catholic majority in Ireland and once emancipation was achieved held “monster meetings”, such as the one held in this very spot in 1823, attended by up to 100,000 people, pushing for the re-creation of an independent Kingdom of Ireland to govern itself with the then ruling monarch.

The Cache

Nothing major to share, it should be an easy enough cache and dash. BYOP as there is none supplied. There is space for one car to park on the road, when coming from the Glencullen direction. Just don't leave your car unattended as this is an entrance to private land.

I wanted to draw people to this lovely spot along the R116. I've passed it many times and always thought back to what it must have been like all those years ago. It's also a lovely spot for a drive, not too far from the hustle and bustle of the city. I am placing this cache today, 23rd July 2016, 193 years after Daniel O'Connell stood on this very spot!
